Eyelash Growth

Eyelash growth to normal lengths can take several months and consists of three phases:

Anagen – Lasting up to 7 weeks this cycle is very active as hair cells rapidly divide and get added to hair shafts.

Catagen – Beginning at the end of the Anagen phase this is where the hair stops growing and can last 3 weeks.

Telogen – Also known as the resting phase about 10-15% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time. This phase generally lasts over 100 days for eyelashes and eyebrows.

Factors that contribute to slow eyelash growth are things like diet and alcohol consumption. Poor diets result in a lack of essential vitamins and nutrients that are critical for proper eyelash growth and alcohol can slow the growth rate of eyelashes.

Conversely, people who eat properly will experience faster eyelash growth rates and also have healthier lashes that will be less prone to falling out or breaking.

Burn victims can experience complete loss of hair that may never grow back and cancer patients typically lose their body hair during chemo treatment but this will usually grow back after treatment stops.

As we age our hair including eyelashes will take longer to grow and may also stop growing altogether while younger people will not have a problem with hair growth.

Family genetics as well as hormone levels also play a factor in growing eyelashes so we can see that there is a number of factors all operating independently that can affect growing longer lashes.

Eyelash serums (also known as eyelash conditioners) have been developed to aid in growing eyelashes faster and longer and they range in price and quality. LiLash is one brand of eyelash serum that has received good reviews by both doctors and consumers as being effective and safe to use on a regular basis.
